Do I Need A Permit?

The best source for information and answers is using the State's Permit Navigator tool. It's a free, easy to use, interactive, self-guided exercise that asks simple questions to determine permits that may be required for your project and will direct you to the appropriate state contacts to apply for those permits.

A couple common instances where State or other permits are required:

Waste Systems:

ALL waste systems require State permitting -- septic, gray water, composting toilets, even outhouses. These include, but are not limited to, new construction, renovations adding bedrooms, all campgrounds, and any repairs/updates to an existing system. Flood Hazard Area (rivers, streams, etc.):

If your project/property is located near a river or stream, it is very likely you will need a Flood Hazard Area Permit before you build or make other alterations like bringing in gravel or fill.

Shoreland (pond, lakes, etc.):

If your project is located near a pond or lake, any new development, re-development, or clearing within 250 feet from mean water level may require a permit or registration.
